Ecologists kept confusing two different questions:
"WHERE does it live?" → answered by habitat.
"HOW does it make a living?" → answered by niche.
If we only knew where a lion lives (grassland) we still wouldn't know how it survives — what it eats, when it hunts, what eats it. Two species can share the same habitat but have different niches, which is exactly how they avoid wiping each other out. So we need both words.
This forces resource partitioning — species split the niche (feed at different times, heights, or on different prey sizes) so their realized niches stop overlapping.
physical place / address where it lives and reproduces
Ecological niche is the organism's
total functional role — all its interactions and resource use
Two species can share a habitat but not a
full ecological niche (indefinitely)
Fundamental niche is
the full range of conditions a species could use with no competitors/predators
Realized niche is
the actual range occupied after competition and predation restrict it
Relationship between realized and fundamental niche
realized ⊆ fundamental (always equal or smaller)
Competitive exclusion principle states
no two species can occupy the same niche indefinitely in one place
Splitting a niche to allow coexistence is called
resource partitioning
Hutchinson described the niche as a(n)
n-dimensional hypervolume
An earthworm's trophic role in its niche
detritivore that recycles nutrients and aerates soil
Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old
A habitat is like your house address — it's just where you live. A niche is like your whole job and daily routine: what you eat, when you wake up, who you work with, what temperature you like. Lots of people can live on the same street (same habitat), but if two people had the exact same job in the exact same place, one would eventually push the other out. That's why animals sharing a home always do slightly different jobs so they can all get along.
Dekho, habitat aur niche do alag cheezein hain jinhe log aksar confuse karte hain. Habitat matlab bas jagah — jaise kisi ka ghar ka address. Jaise cheenti mitti me rehti hai, machhli paani me. Lekin niche matlab us organism ka poora role — kya khata hai, kaun use khata hai, kab active rehta hai, kitni garmi ya nami jhel sakta hai. Seedha bolo to niche = organism ki naukri aur poori daily routine, sirf address nahi.
Ek important point: ek hi habitat me kai species reh sakti hain, par unka niche bilkul same nahi ho sakta. Agar do species ka niche ekdum same ho — same khana, same time, same jagah — to competitive exclusion principle ke hisaab se ek species doosri ko hara ke bhagā degi. Isiliye nature me species apna kaam thoda-thoda alag karti hain (kisi ne oopar khaya, kisi ne neeche) — ise resource partitioning kehte hain.
Fir hai fundamental vs realized niche. Fundamental matlab jitni conditions me species theoretically jee sakti hai (agar koi competitor na ho). Realized matlab jitni me actual me jee paati hai, kyunki competitors aur predators uska kuch hissa cheen lete hain. Yaad rakho: realized hamesha chhota ya barabar hota hai fundamental se — "Real is Reduced". Yeh idea important hai kyunki isse hi samajh aata hai ki alag-alag species ek saath kaise survive karti hain bina ek doosre ko khatam kiye.
