Common elements and their symbols (first 30)

WHAT are we learning?

WHY symbols exist: Writing "two atoms of hydrogen bonded to one of oxygen" every time is painful. H2O\text{H}_2\text{O} is universal, compact, and unambiguous.

HOW symbols are built (the WHY behind the letters)

Symbols come from two sources:

  1. Modern English/Latin name → first letter(s). E.g. Hydrogen → H, Calcium → Ca.
  2. Old Latin names for metals known since antiquity → the symbol looks "weird" in English.

The first 30 elements (memorise in order)

ZZ Name Symbol ZZ Name Symbol
1 Hydrogen H 16 Sulfur S
2 Helium He 17 Chlorine Cl
3 Lithium Li 18 Argon Ar
4 Beryllium Be 19 Potassium K
5 Boron B 20 Calcium Ca
6 Carbon C 21 Scandium Sc
7 Nitrogen N 22 Titanium Ti
8 Oxygen O 23 Vanadium V
9 Fluorine F 24 Chromium Cr
10 Neon Ne 25 Manganese Mn
11 Sodium Na 26 Iron Fe
12 Magnesium Mg 27 Cobalt Co
13 Aluminium Al 28 Nickel Ni
14 Silicon Si 29 Copper Cu
15 Phosphorus P 30 Zinc Zn

Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Recall Explain it simply (click to reveal)

Imagine every kind of atom is a student in a class, lined up by their roll number = number of protons. Roll number 1 is Hydrogen, roll number 6 is Carbon, roll number 26 is Iron. Instead of writing their full names, we give each a short nickname badge (the symbol). Some badges match the name (Carbon → C). But a few very old, famous students kept their ancient Latin nicknames — Iron wears "Fe", Sodium wears "Na", because people knew them thousands of years ago. Rule for badges: first letter BIG, second letter small — so nobody confuses one student for two.

Connections

  • Atomic Number and Mass NumberZZ orders the whole table.
  • Structure of the Atom — protons/neutrons/electrons behind ZZ and AA.
  • Metals Nonmetals and Metalloids — Sc–Zn are metals; C, N, O, P, S nonmetals.
  • Valency and Electron Configuration — position predicts bonding.
  • Isotopes — same symbol, different AA (same ZZ).

#flashcards/chemistry

What defines an element and its position in the table?
Its atomic number ZZ = number of protons.
Symbol and ZZ of Sodium?
Na, Z=11Z = 11 (from Latin Natrium).
Symbol and ZZ of Potassium?
K, Z=19Z = 19 (from Latin Kalium).
Symbol and ZZ of Iron?
Fe, Z=26Z = 26 (from Latin Ferrum).
Symbol and ZZ of Copper?
Cu, Z=29Z = 29 (from Latin Cuprum).
What is the capitalisation rule for two-letter symbols?
First letter capital, second lowercase (e.g. Co, not CO).
Difference between Co and CO?
Co = cobalt (one element); CO = carbon + oxygen (carbon monoxide, two atoms).
Element at Z=6Z = 6, 7, 8?
Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O).
Which elements at Z30Z\le30 have single-letter symbols?
H, B, C, N, O, F, P, S, K, V.
How do you find the number of neutrons from AA and ZZ?
neutrons =AZ= A - Z.
Neutrons in 2040{}^{40}_{20}Ca?
4020=2040 - 20 = 20 neutrons.
Symbol of element Z=30Z = 30?
Zn (Zinc).
Symbols of the four transition metals iron→zinc in order 26–30?
Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn.
Which noble gases appear in the first 20?
Helium (He, 2), Neon (Ne, 10), Argon (Ar, 18).

Dekho, periodic table basically ek "library catalog" hai atoms ke liye. Har element ko uske atomic number ZZ ke hisaab se line me lagaya jaata hai — ZZ matlab number of protons, aur yahi element ko define karta hai. Pehle 30 elements ko order me yaad karna chemistry ka "alphabet" seekhne jaisa hai. Ek baar yeh aa gaya, to formulas aur reactions padhna easy ho jaata hai.

Symbol ka rule simple hai: pehla letter hamesha capital, doosra (agar ho) hamesha small. Isliye cobalt = Co likhte hain, "CO" nahi — kyunki "CO" ka matlab carbon monoxide (do atoms) ho jaata hai. Capitalisation se pata chalta hai kitne atoms ki baat ho rahi hai.

Sabse zyada trick wale hain woh char purane metals jinke symbol Latin name se aate hain: Na (Sodium, Natrium), K (Potassium, Kalium), Fe (Iron, Ferrum), Cu (Copper, Cuprum). English name se guess mat karna, warna galat ho jayega. Inhe alag se ratt lo: "Naughty Kids Feel Curious".

Aur ek useful formula: neutrons =AZ= A - Z, jahan AA mass number hai. Jaise 2040{}^{40}_{20}Ca me neutrons =4020=20= 40 - 20 = 20. Exam me yeh combination — symbol + ZZ + neutron count — bahut aata hai, to 80/20 rule follow karo: single-letter elements aur woh Latin waale char pehle pakke karo.
