Learn about psychological round numbers
WHAT is a psychological round number?
WHY do humans do this?
- We think in decimal and remember round figures more easily ( is "cleaner" than ).
- Round numbers become anchors — a psychological reference we judge "cheap" or "expensive" against.
- Targets and stop-losses get lumped at obvious figures → order flow concentrates → a real, self-fulfilling barrier appears.
HOW the level forms (derive it from order flow)
We don't need a fancy formula — we derive the barrier from how orders stack.
Step 1 — Model the order book. Let = number of resting sell orders at price . Empirically traders round, so orders pile at multiples of a round figure (like ).
Why this step? Because price only moves when buyers absorb all resting sell orders at a level.
Step 2 — Extra density at the round number. Write density as a smooth background plus a spike at the round number: where = the excess orders clustered exactly at , and is a spike (Dirac-like bump).
Why this step? The spike is the whole point: the round number holds more orders than nearby prices.
Step 3 — Cost to break through. To push price from just below to just above, buyers must absorb:
Why this step? The energy needed to break resistance , the clustered volume. Big = strong level.
Roundness hierarchy (why 1000 beats 100):
| Level | Trailing zeros | Relative strength |
|---|---|---|
| half-round | weak | |
| 2 zeros | medium | |
| half of 1000 | strong | |
| 3 zeros | very strong |

Active Recall
Recall Why do round numbers become support/resistance? (click)
Human brains anchor on round figures, so buy/sell orders and stops cluster at them. Concentrated order flow creates a real barrier — and belief in the barrier makes it self-fulfilling.
Recall Which is stronger, resistance at 100 or at 1000, and why?
1000 — it has more trailing zeros, so the excess clustered volume . Rounder ⇒ bigger crowd ⇒ stronger level.
Recall Explain it to a 12-year-old (Feynman)
Imagine everyone in your class agrees to meet "at 3 o'clock sharp." Nobody plans to meet at 3:07. So a big crowd gathers at exactly 3:00. Prices are the same: traders all "meet" at nice numbers like 100 or 1000, so a crowd of orders piles up there, and price gets stuck — just like people bunching at the door at 3 o'clock.

Connections
- Support and Resistance — round numbers are a type of horizontal S/R.
- Price Action — how price behaves as it approaches these zones.
- Order Flow and Order Book — the mechanism (clustered orders) behind the effect.
- Break and Retest — polarity flip at round numbers.
- Stop-Loss Placement — why stops go just beyond the round zone.
- Anchoring Bias — the behavioural finance root cause.
- Fibonacci Levels — another set of "reference" levels traders cluster around.

Dekho, psychological round numbers ka funda simple hai: humara dimaag round figures pasand karta hai. Koi bhi trader "97.35 pe bech dunga" nahi sochta — wo sochta hai "100 pe bech dunga" ya "500 pe target". Isi wajah se sabke buy/sell orders aur stop-loss ekdum saaf numbers (100, 500, 1000, Nifty 18000) pe cluster ho jaate hain. Jab itne saare orders ek hi jagah pile up ho jaate hain, wahaan ek asli support ya resistance ban jaata hai.
Sabse mazedaar baat — ye ek self-fulfilling prophecy hai. Level isliye kaam karta hai kyunki sabko lagta hai ki ye kaam karega. Jab hazaaron log sochte hain "500 pe resistance hai", to sab wahi bechte hain, aur unki selling se sach mein resistance ban jaata hai. Belief se action, action se result.
Ek important rule: jitne zyada zeros, utna strong level. 1000 ka level 100 se zyada strong hota hai, kyunki uspe zyada crowd nazar rakhta hai (excess volume bada hota hai). Yaad rakho — "Zeros = Zeal".
Do galtiyan mat karna. Pehli: level ko exact line mat samjho, wo ek zone hoti hai (roughly ), kyunki smart log thoda pehle hi front-run kar dete hain. Doosri: strong trend mein round number sirf ek speed bump hai, deewar nahi — momentum zyada ho to price seedha tod ke nikal jaati hai. Isliye round numbers ko trend aur volume ke saath use karo, andha-dhundh ulta trade mat karo.
