WHAT is coevolution?

The key word is reciprocal. If a plant evolves in response to climate, that is not coevolution (climate doesn't evolve back). But if a plant evolves tougher leaves → insects evolve stronger jaws → plant evolves toxins → insects evolve detox enzymes... that is coevolution.


WHY does it happen? (Derivation from first principles)

Let's build coevolution from Darwin's basics rather than memorise it.

  1. Variation exists within every population (some plants make more toxin than others).
  2. Selection favours variants that survive/reproduce better in their environment.
  3. Key insight: for interacting species, the other species IS part of the environment.
  4. Therefore when species B evolves, it changes the environment of A.
  5. So the "fixed" fitness landscape of A is no longer fixed — it moves whenever B adapts.
  6. A must keep adapting to a moving target. Same for B. → a reciprocal, ongoing loop.

Imagine a game of tag where the tagger gets faster, so you have to get faster too, which makes the tagger get faster again — nobody can stop or they lose. Animals and plants play this game with their bodies over millions of years. A plant becomes poisonous, so a bug learns to eat poison, so the plant makes stronger poison. They keep pushing each other to change. That's coevolution: two living things becoming each other's "gym coach," forcing each other to level up (or to fit together perfectly, like a key and a lock, if they're teammates instead of rivals).

Agar sirf ek species climate ke saath badle to woh coevolution nahi hai, kyunki climate wapas evolve nahi karta. Lekin agar plant zeher banaye, phir insect us zeher ko digest karna seekh le, phir plant aur strong zeher banaye — yeh loop hi coevolution hai.
