Write the overall equation for photosynthesis

WHAT is the overall equation?

The conditions (light and chlorophyll) are written on the arrow — they are required, but they are not reactants (they are not consumed into the products).

WHY each term is there (don't just memorise — reason it)

HOW to balance it from scratch (Derivation)

Let's derive the coefficients, never assuming them.

Write the skeleton: aCO2+bH2OC6H12O6+cO2a\,CO_2 + b\,H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + c\,O_2

Step 1 — Balance Carbon. Glucose has 6 C. Each CO2CO_2 has 1 C ⇒ a=6a = 6. Why this step? Carbon only enters from CO2CO_2, so all 6 carbons of glucose must come from 6 CO2CO_2.

Step 2 — Balance Hydrogen. Glucose has 12 H. Each H2OH_2O has 2 H ⇒ 2b=12b=62b = 12 \Rightarrow b = 6. Why this step? Hydrogen only enters from water; 12 H needs 6 water molecules.

Step 3 — Balance Oxygen. Left side O = from CO2CO_2: 6×2=126\times2 = 12, from H2OH_2O: 6×1=66\times1 = 6 ⇒ total =18= 18 O. Right side O = in glucose: 66, in O2O_2: 2c2c. So 18=6+2c2c=12c=618 = 6 + 2c \Rightarrow 2c = 12 \Rightarrow c = 6. Why this step? Atoms can't appear or vanish — oxygen must balance.

Result: 6CO2+6H2OC6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2 \checkmark

Flashcards

What is the balanced overall equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2+6H2OlightC6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \xrightarrow{\text{light}} C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2
What are the two raw materials (reactants) of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide (CO2CO_2) and water (H2OH_2O)
What are the products of photosynthesis?
Glucose (C6H12O6C_6H_{12}O_6) and oxygen (O2O_2)
Where does the released oxygen come from — CO₂ or water?
From water (proven by 18O^{18}O isotope experiments)
What two conditions are written on the reaction arrow?
Light energy and chlorophyll
Why are there exactly 6 CO2CO_2 molecules?
Glucose has 6 carbon atoms, each CO2CO_2 supplies 1 carbon
Why 6 water molecules in the simple equation?
Glucose has 12 H; each water supplies 2 H, so 6 water gives 12 H
What does "photosynthesis" literally mean?
"Putting together (synthesis) using light (photo)"
Is light a reactant?
No — it is energy; written on the arrow, not consumed as a molecule
What is the reverse process of photosynthesis?
Aerobic respiration: C6H12O6+6O26CO2+6H2O+energyC_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2 \to 6CO_2 + 6H_2O + \text{energy}
What is the "honest" equation showing water on both sides?
6CO2+12H2OC6H12O6+6O2+6H2O6CO_2 + 12H_2O \to C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2 + 6H_2O

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Imagine a plant is a little kitchen. Sunlight is the stove that gives energy. The plant grabs air (carbon dioxide) and water from the soil. Using the green stuff in its leaves (chlorophyll) to catch the sunlight, it cooks them together into sugar (its food). While cooking, it puffs out oxygen — the same air we breathe! So plants feed themselves and make our oxygen for free. The recipe: 6 puffs of CO2CO_2 + 6 drops of water + sunshine = 1 sugar + 6 puffs of oxygen.

Hinglish (regional understanding)

Intuition Hinglish mein samjho

Dekho, photosynthesis ka matlab hai plant apna khaana khud banaata hai sunlight se. Plant do cheezein leta hai — hawa se carbon dioxide (CO₂) aur jameen se paani (H₂O). Phir patte ke green pigment chlorophyll ki madad se sunlight ki energy ko capture karke, in dono ko jod kar glucose (sugar) banaata hai, aur side-product ke roop me oxygen (O₂) chhodta hai — wahi oxygen jo hum saans lete hain.

Balanced equation yaad rakhna simple hai: 6CO2+6H2OlightC6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \xrightarrow{\text{light}} C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2. Logic samjho — glucose me 6 carbon hote hain, isliye 6 CO₂ chahiye. Glucose me 12 hydrogen hote hain, har paani me 2 hydrogen, isliye 6 paani chahiye. Light aur chlorophyll arrow ke upar likhte hain, kyunki ye reactant nahi hain — light to bas energy hai, aur chlorophyll catalyst jaisa kaam karta hai.

Ek important baat (exam me poochte hain): jo oxygen release hota hai wo CO₂ se nahi, paani se aata hai. Isotope 18O^{18}O wale experiment ne ye prove kiya. Bahut students galti karte hain ki oxygen CO₂ se aata hai — kyunki CO₂ me bhi to oxygen hai na — par actual answer water hai.

Yaad rakhne ka trick: "all sixes except glucose is one" — yaani 6,61,66, 6 \to 1, 6. Aur respiration ise ulta hai: glucose + oxygen → CO₂ + paani + energy. Photosynthesis energy store karta hai, respiration energy release karta hai. Bas itna samajh lo, poora topic clear!
