Cells aur unke parts bahut chote hote hain — itne chote ki rozmarra ki units kaam nahi karti. Biologists metric ladder se neeche jaate hain: millimetres (mm) → micrometres (µm) → nanometres (nm). Har ek step neeche jaana ×1000 chota hota hai (zyada, chote tukde), aur har step upar jaana ÷1000 hota hai. Microscopy measurements isi range mein hoti hain, isliye tumhe in units ke beech smoothly jaana ZAROOR aana chahiye.
Intuition Sirf metres kyun nahi use karte?
Ek typical animal cell lagbhag 0.00002 m hoti hai. Biology ko metres mein likhna matlab zeros ke dariya mein doobna. Metric system humein prefix units deta hai taaki numbers friendly rahein (jaise "0.00002 m" ki jagah "20 µm"). Har prefix bas ek power of ten ka shorthand hai.
Millimetre (mm) = 1 0 − 3 m. Ek metre ka hazar waan hissa. Ruler par sabse chota nishaan.
Micrometre (µm) = 1 0 − 6 m. Ek millimetre ka hazar waan hissa. Poore cells aur organelles ka scale.
Nanometre (nm) = 1 0 − 9 m. Ek micrometre ka hazar waan hissa. Membranes, ribosomes, viruses ka scale.
Intuition Do-sawaal wala method (direction kabhi galat nahi hoga)
Kya main CHOTI unit mein ja raha hoon? (jaise mm → µm). Tab number BADA hona chahiye → 1000 se multiply karo .
Kya main BADI unit mein ja raha hoon? (jaise nm → µm). Tab number CHOTA hona chahiye → 1000 se divide karo .
Length ki miqdar kabhi nahi badlti — bas ye badlta hai ki tum use kitne tukdon mein kaatte ho.
Worked example 1) 0.05 mm ko µm mein convert karo
mm → µm jaana = choti unit → 1000 se multiply karo.
0.05 mm × 1000 = 50 μ m
Ye step kyun? µm, mm se chota hai, isliye usi length mein zyada µm aate hain — number barhta hai.
Worked example 2) Ek virus 80 nm ka hai. µm mein express karo.
nm → µm jaana = badi unit → 1000 se divide karo.
80 nm ÷ 1000 = 0.08 μ m
Ye step kyun? µm bada dabba hai; usi length mein kam bade dabbe aate hain, isliye number ghatta hai.
Worked example 3) Ek cell 0.02 mm mapi gayi. Kitne nm?
mm → nm ek level skip karta hai → × 1 0 6 .
0.02 × 1 0 6 = 20000 nm = 2 × 1 0 4 nm
Ye step kyun? Do neeche ke steps: × 1000 (µm tak = 20 µm), phir dobara × 1000 (nm tak).
Worked example 4) Ek ribosome 25 nm chaura hai. mm mein express karo.
nm → mm ek level upar skip karta hai → ÷ 1 0 6 .
25 ÷ 1 0 6 = 0.000025 mm = 2.5 × 1 0 − 5 mm
Ye step kyun? Do upar ke steps, har ek ÷ 1000 , isliye total ÷ 1 , 000 , 000 .
Worked example 5) Alag-alag units mein lengths jodo: 1.5 µm + 600 nm
Pehle SAME unit mein convert karo. 600 nm ÷ 1000 = 0.6 µm.
1.5 + 0.6 = 2.1 μ m
Ye step kyun? Sirf same units wali quantities hi add ho sakti hain — nm aur µm ko mix karna nonsense deta hai.
Common mistake "nm mein jaana chota hai, isliye divide karna chahiye."
Ye sahi kyun lagta hai: nm ek choti unit hai, aur "chota" sunke log "divide" sochte hain.
Fix: Unit ka size aur number ko alag rakhkar socho. Unit choti hoti hai, toh number bada hota hai → tum multiply karte ho . Chote dabbe ⇒ tumhe zyada dabbe chahiye.
Common mistake "1 mm = 100 µm" (1000 ki jagah 100 use karna).
Ye sahi kyun lagta hai: cm ki aadat se centi/100 ghus jaata hai.
Fix: Yahan har metric prefix step ×1000 (1 0 3 ) hai, 100 nahi. mm→µm→nm sabhi teen zeros se jump karte hain.
Common mistake "mm se nm ×1000 hai."

Ek chocolate bar socho. Ek millimetre ek bada tukda hai. Us tukde ko 1000 chote crumbs mein todo — har crumb ek micrometre hai. Ab ek crumb lo aur use 1000 dhool ke zarre mein kuchlo — har zarra ek nanometre hai. Poori bar abhi bhi utni hi badi hai! Jab tukde chote hote hain, tumhare paas bas zyada hote hain. Isliye chote tukdon mein jaana = zyada count = multiply; bade tukdon mein jaana = kam count = divide.

Direction trick: "Down to small, blow it tall" (multiply) / "Up to big, shrink the fig" (divide).
