What is Price Action?

WHAT it looks at:

  • The shape of each candle (body vs wick).
  • The relationship between consecutive candles (higher high? lower low?).
  • The structure: trends, ranges, swing highs and swing lows.
  • Key levels: support, resistance, and where price reacted before.

WHY it works: A chart is a record of an ongoing auction. Every candle is a snapshot of who won — buyers or sellers — over that time. Reading candles = reading the real-time fight between demand and supply.

First Principles: Deriving a Candle From Raw Trades

Before trusting any pattern, build the candle from scratch.

Candle=(O,  H,  L,  C)\text{Candle} = (O,\; H,\; L,\; C)

  • OO = Open (first trade price of the period)
  • HH = High (highest trade)
  • LL = Low (lowest trade)
  • CC = Close (last trade price)

Feynman Explanation

Recall Explain to a 12-year-old (click to reveal)

Imagine a tug-of-war between a red team (sellers) and a blue team (buyers). Each candle is one round. If the blue team pulls the rope far and keeps it (big body closing up), blue is winning. If the rope gets yanked far one way but snaps back (long wick), that team tried hard but lost the round. If you watch which team keeps winning rounds (higher highs), you can guess who'll win next — without needing a scoreboard robot (indicator) that only tells you the score a few rounds late. You just watch the rope.

Flashcards

What does "price action" study?
The raw movement of price itself (candles, swings, structure) on a naked chart, without derived indicators.
Why are indicators considered lagging?
They are mathematical transforms of past price, so they can only repackage information price already showed, and always later.
Formula for the conviction ratio of a candle?
ρ=Body/Range=CO/(HL)\rho = \text{Body}/\text{Range} = |C-O|/(H-L), bounded in [0,1][0,1].
Why can body never exceed range?
Open and close both lie inside the high–low range by definition, so COHL|C-O| \le H-L.
Structural definition of an uptrend?
Successive higher swing highs AND higher swing lows (HH + HL).
What is a swing high?
A candle whose high is higher than the candles immediately on both sides — a local pivot.
What does a long lower wick imply?
Sellers pushed price down but buyers rejected it, closing much higher — bullish rejection, especially at support.
Does a doji signal a reversal?
No — only indecision/pause; it's a question needing confirmation from the next candle.
When is trend structure "broken" in an uptrend?
When price makes a lower low, breaking the previous swing low — an objective exit signal.
BROWS mnemonic stands for?
Body, Range/wicks, Overall structure, Where (level), So-what (forecast).

Connections

  • Support and Resistance — the levels where price-action signals gain meaning.
  • Candlestick Patterns — pin bars, engulfing, dojis built from body/wick logic.
  • Market Structure and Trends — swing highs/lows and break of structure.
  • Volume Analysis — the one non-price data that confirms conviction.
  • Why Indicators Lag — the mathematical case against derived tools.
  • Trend vs Range Trading — choosing strategy from raw structure.

Hinglish (regional understanding)

Intuition Hinglish mein samjho

Dekho, price action ka matlab hai chart ko "naked" padhna — sirf candles aur swings, koi RSI, MACD ya moving average nahi. Kyun? Kyunki har indicator asal mein purane price ka hi maths formula hai. Matlab woh tumhe wahi baat batata hai jo price pehle se dikha chuka hai — bas thoda late. Toh smart trader seedha source par jaata hai: price khud. Price hi ek leading cheez hai, baaki sab derived aur delayed.

Har candle ek tug-of-war ka round samjho — buyers (blue) vs sellers (red). Body bada aur upar close hua toh buyers jeete zabardast (conviction). Lambi lower wick ka matlab sellers ne neeche pusha but buyers ne rope wapis kheench liya — yeh rejection hai, especially support par bullish. Formula simple: conviction ratio ρ=Body/Range\rho = \text{Body}/\text{Range}, jo hamesha 0 aur 1 ke beech hoti hai, kyunki open aur close dono high-low ke andar hi hote hain.

Trend padhna bhi structure se: agar swing highs aur swing lows dono upar ja rahe hain (HH aur HL) toh uptrend. Jaise hi price ek lower low banaye — matlab pichhla swing low toot gaya — trend challenged, wahi tumhara objective exit. Isme koi lag nahi, kyunki structure toote wale hi second flip ho jaata hai, moving average ki tarah 20 candle wait nahi karta.

Ek zaroori baat — bada candle dekh ke andha follow mat karna. Agar woh strong resistance par bana hai toh woh exhaustion bhi ho sakta hai (last buyers rush kar rahe). Context sabse important: kahan candle bana yeh kitna bada bana se zyada matter karta hai. Roz "BROWS" order follow karo — Body, Range/wicks, Overall structure, Where (level), So-what (forecast). Isse tumhari aankh training ho jayegi.
