3.2.13Candlestick Patterns

Practice combining patterns with context

WHY context beats the pattern alone

A candlestick only records the emotion of one period — the tug-of-war between buyers and sellers. That emotion is meaningful only if it happens somewhere important.

  • A bullish reversal pattern (hammer, bullish engulfing, morning star) is only "reversal" if there is a downtrend to reverse. In an uptrend it is a continuation blip.
  • A bearish reversal pattern is only meaningful after an uptrend into resistance.

HOW to read a pattern: the 4-Filter Checklist

This isn't a magic number — it's a forcing function so you never trade a naked shape.

Flashcards

What are the four context filters for judging a candlestick pattern?
Trend, Location, Volume, Confirmation (T,L,V,CT, L, V, C).
Why is a hammer in the middle of an uptrend low-value?
It's a bullish reversal pattern but there is no downtrend to reverse, so T=0T=0.
What does the confirmation candle protect you from?
One-day fakes/traps — patterns that fail on the very next session.
Where does a bearish reversal pattern carry the most weight?
After an uptrend, right at resistance / a prior high / a round number.
Why can a very large candle be a warning rather than a green light?
It may mean the move already happened (exhaustion), so you'd be entering late with high reversion risk.
In the score Q=T+L+V+CQ=T+L+V+C, what does Q1Q\le1 mean practically?
It's near a coin flip — skip the trade.
Two identical hammers can have opposite value — what decides?
Their context (trend + location + volume + confirmation), not their shape.
What volume behaviour confirms a reversal candle?
A volume spike on the reversal candle (real participation), not thin/average volume.

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Imagine someone shouts "STOP!" A candlestick pattern is that shout. But whether you listen depends on where they shout it. If a kid shouts "STOP!" while playing in a field — meaningless. If a lifeguard shouts "STOP!" at the edge of deep water — you freeze. Same word, totally different meaning, because of context. In trading, the "shout" is the candle shape; the "deep water edge" is a support/resistance level after a big move. We only listen when the shout happens at a dangerous edge — and we wait one second (the confirmation candle) to make sure they really meant it.

Dekho, candlestick pattern akela kuch nahi hota — wo bas ek "shabd" hai. Asli meaning tab banti hai jab tum uske aas-paas ka context dekhte ho. Ek hammer agar downtrend ke baad, kisi tested support pe, high volume ke saath bane aur agla candle green close kare — toh wahi high-probability reversal hai. Lekin wahi same hammer agar uptrend ke beech, bina kisi level ke ban jaye, toh wo bekaar hai. Shape same, par meaning ulta — sirf context ki wajah se.

Isliye kabhi bhi naked pattern pe trade mat lo. Har baar 4 filter check karo: Trend (jise pattern reverse kar sake), Location (support/resistance/round number), Volume (real participation ka spike), aur Confirmation (agla candle direction confirm kare). Mental score Q=T+L+V+CQ = T+L+V+C banao — Q=4Q=4 matlab textbook setup, Q1Q\le1 matlab coin toss, chhod do.

Ek badi galti jo sab karte hain: "pattern perfect tha, confirmation ka wait nahi kiya." Yaad rakho, 30-40% patterns agle hi candle pe fail ho jaate hain — confirmation candle hi tumhe trap se bachati hai. Thoda kharab entry price winners pe, full loss se hamesha sasta hota hai.

Simple mantra: "TLC before you trade" — Trend, Location, Confirmation (aur Volume). Jis pattern ko TLC na mile, usse apna paisa mat do.
