WHAT is slope?

WHY define it as a ratio and not just "rise"? Kyunki "rise" akela meaningless hai agar yeh nahi bataya ki kitna run kiya. metre horizontal par metre chadhna steep hai; metre par metre chadhna lagbhag flat hai. Ratio rise ko per unit run normalize karta hai, isliye yeh sahi steepness measure karta hai.

HOW to derive the formula from first principles

Ek line par koi bhi do alag points lo: aur .

Step 1 — horizontal change (run) measure karo. se ki taraf jaate hue, , se jaata hai, toh Why this step? Run sirf horizontal displacement hai; displacement hamesha (final − initial) hoti hai.

Step 2 — vertical change (rise) measure karo. Isi tarah , se jaata hai, toh Why this step? Rise vertical displacement hai, phir se (final − initial), aur hume same order mein subtract karna chahiye jaise ke liye kiya tha.

Step 3 — ratio lo. Why this step? Slope define hoti hai rise per run se, toh hum Step 2 ko Step 1 se divide karte hain.

WHY is the answer independent of which two points you pick? Ek seedhi line par, alag point-pairs se bane triangles similar hote hain (horizontal ke saath same angle). Similar right triangles ki corresponding sides ke ratios equal hote hain, isliye har jagah same hota hai. Yahi cheez "ek line ki slope" ko ek well-defined single number banati hai.

Interpretation — reading the sign and size

Angle se link. Agar ek line positive -axis ke saath angle banati hai, toh right triangle mein rise "opposite" hai aur run "adjacent" hai, toh Why? Tangent, definition se opposite/adjacent hota hai — slope inclination angle ka tangent hai.

Active recall

Recall Cover and answer
  1. Slope ko words mein define karo. → rise ka run se ratio, .
  2. Kaun sa coordinate difference upar jaata hai? → 's (rise).
  3. Horizontal line ki slope? → . Vertical line ki? → undefined.
  4. Slope of kya? → woh angle jo line positive -axis ke saath banati hai.
  5. Slope kisi bhi do points ke liye same kyun hoti hai? → similar triangles ⇒ equal side ratios.
Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Ek ramp par chadhne ki kalpana karo. Slope ek "cost tag" hai: har ek kadam aage ke liye tumhe kitne kadam upar milte hain? Agar tag kehta hai, toh har ek kadam aage tumhe upar chadhata hai — steep! Agar kehta hai, tum kabhi upar nahi jaate — flat floor. Agar tag minus number kehta hai, tum neeche ja rahe ho. Aur seedha upar jaane waali diwar? Tum "aage kadam" nahi rakh sakte, isliye cost tag ka koi matlab nahi — isliye hum vertical line ki slope ko "undefined" kehte hain. Tag dhundne ke liye, do jagah chuno, dekho doosri jagah kitni upar hai (rise), dekho kitni door hai (run), aur divide karo.

Flashcards

What is the slope formula for two points ?
, with .
In "rise over run", which coordinate is the rise?
The change in ().
What does a slope of mean geometrically?
Ek horizontal line (koi vertical change nahi).
What is the slope of a vertical line?
Undefined (run , division by zero).
Slope equals the tangent of what angle?
The angle the line makes with the positive -axis: .
Why is a line's slope independent of the two chosen points?
Jo right triangles bante hain woh similar hote hain, isliye unke rise:run ratios equal hote hain.
Slope through and ?
.
Slope through and ?
.
What sign does an uphill (rising to the right) line have?
Positive slope.
Common trap: is the slope?
Nahi — yeh reciprocal hai; slope mein upar hota hai.
