5.1.2 · Biology › Ecology & Ecosystems
Ek ecosystem ek badi living machine ki tarah hai jo ek room ke andar rakhi hai. Machine ke living parts (plants, animals, fungi, bacteria) biotic factors hain. Room ki conditions khud (temperature, light, water, air, soil) abiotic factors hain. Living machine constantly room ke saath react karti hai — aur dheere-dheere use reshape bhi karti hai.
Biotic factor ecosystem ka koi bhi living (ya kabhi-living) component aur uske effects hote hain. Isme producers, consumers, decomposers, aur interactions jaise predation, competition, disease, aur parasitism shamil hain.
Definition Abiotic factor
Abiotic factor ecosystem ka koi bhi non-living, physical ya chemical component hota hai — jaise temperature, sunlight, water, pH, salinity, wind, minerals, aur dissolved gases (O₂, CO₂).
Yeh split kyun important hai: ecologists jaanna chahte hain ki ek organism yahan kyun rehta hai aur wahan kyun nahi . Har distribution "kaun aas-paas hai" (biotic) aur "environment kaisa hai" (abiotic) ke mix se explain hoti hai. Inhe alag karne se hum ek ek cause ko test kar sakte hain (poore ecosystems ke level par Forecast-then-Verify).
Do sawal order mein pucho:
Kya yeh zinda hai, ya kisi zinda cheez ka direct product/action hai? → biotic .
Agar nahi, toh kya yeh surroundings ki koi physical ya chemical condition hai? → abiotic .
Common mistake Steel-man: "Sookhe patte aur animal droppings abiotic hain kyunki woh move/alive nahi hain."
Kyun sahi lagta hai: woh inert hain, toh soil mein "bas kuch cheez" lagte hain.
Fix: yeh once-living material hain aur decomposers dwara todte hain → yeh origin mein biotic hai. Detritus aur dung biotic components hain. Sirf woh pure minerals jo poori decomposition ke baad release hote hain (nitrate, phosphate ions soil mein) abiotic count hote hain.
Common mistake Steel-man: "Oxygen biotic hai kyunki living things ise banate hain."
Kyun sahi lagta hai: plants O₂ produce karte hain, toh yeh life se juda lagta hai.
Fix: kisi factor ko woh kya hai ke basis par classify karo, nahi ki woh kahan se aaya. Dissolved/atmospheric O₂ environment ki ek chemical hai → abiotic . Origin ≠ category.
Yahan "prove" karne ke liye koi formula nahi hai, lekin hum abiotic limitation ko rate response se quantify kar sakte hain. Enzyme-controlled biotic processes (photosynthesis, respiration) ek abiotic factor jaise temperature ke saath optimum tak badhte hain, phir girte hain.
Worked example Example 1 — Rock pool ko classify karo
Items: crab, seawater salinity, seaweed, water temperature, ek dead barnacle shell, competition for space, dissolved O₂.
Crab → biotic (Kyun? living organism.)
Salinity → abiotic (Kyun? paani ki chemical condition.)
Seaweed → biotic (Kyun? living producer.)
Temperature → abiotic (Kyun? physical condition.)
Dead barnacle shell → biotic (Kyun? once-living material.)
Competition for space → biotic (Kyun? living organisms ke beech ek interaction.)
Dissolved O₂ → abiotic (Kyun? environment ki chemical, chahe life ne banai ho.)
Worked example Example 2 — Distribution explain karna
Sawal: Nettles sirf wahan ugte hain jahan soil mein nitrate zyada ho. Ek biotic aur ek abiotic explanation do.
Abiotic: high nitrate concentration unki growth ke liye favourable hai. (Kyun? soil chemical = abiotic.)
Biotic: kam competing plants ya decomposers ki presence jo woh nitrate release karti hai. (Kyun? dono living organisms involve karte hain.)
Yeh dikhata hai ki ek real distribution ke liye DONO lenses chahiye.
Worked example Example 3 — Feedback direction
Beavers ek dam banate hain → pond banta hai. Kis factor ne kise change kiya?
Ek biotic agent (beaver) ne abiotic factors (water depth, flow rate, dissolved O₂) ko alter kiya. (Yeh step kyun? biotic→abiotic causation dikhata hai — categories interact karti hain, isolated nahi hain.)
Recall Feynman: 12-saal ke bachche ko explain karo
Ek fish tank imagine karo. Fish, plants, aur germs zinda cheezein hain — yeh biotic hai. Paani, uski garam, light, aur kitna namkeen hai non-alive cheezein hain — yeh abiotic hai. Zinda cheezein non-alive cheezein ke bina survive nahi kar sakti, aur zinda cheezein dheere-dheere paani bhi change kar sakti hain (plants oxygen daalte hain). Trick: agar woh paida ho sakti hai ya mar sakti hai, toh biotic hai. Agar woh bas ek condition hai, toh abiotic hai.
"BIO = LIFE, A = ABSENT of life."
Prefix a- ka matlab hai "without" (jaise asymmetric = without symmetry). Toh a biotic = bin a life ke.
Abiotic ke liye sub-list: "SWaLLoW-T" → S oil/Sa linity, Wa ter, L ight, gasLe vels, W ind, T emperature.
Biotic factor kya hota hai? Ecosystem ka koi bhi living (ya once-living) component aur uske interactions.
Abiotic factor kya hota hai? Environment ka koi bhi non-living physical ya chemical component.
Abiotic mein prefix "a-" ka kya matlab hai? "Without" — abiotic = without life.
Ek gira hua dead log biotic hai ya abiotic, aur kyun? Biotic — yeh once-living material hai jo decomposers dwara toda jaata hai.
Dissolved oxygen biotic hai ya abiotic? Abiotic — classify karo woh KYA HAI ke basis par (environment ki ek chemical), na ki uske living origin se.
Ek plant kahan ugta hai, usse affect karne waala ek abiotic aur ek biotic factor do. Abiotic: soil pH/light/temperature. Biotic: competition/grazing/decomposers.
Ecology mein "rate vs temperature" graph bell-shaped kyun hota hai? Badhta Arrhenius reaction rate badhte enzyme denaturation se multiply hota hai, jo ek single optimum peak deta hai.
Ek biotic factor kisi abiotic factor ko change kare, aisa example do. Beaver dam (biotic) water depth badhata hai aur flow rate ghata deta hai (abiotic).
Char abiotic factors batao. Temperature, light intensity, water availability, pH (saath hi salinity, wind, O₂/CO₂).
Teen biotic interactions batao. Predation, competition, disease/parasitism.
