Ek dead, empty cell mein koi cytoplasm nahi hota jo flow ko block kare — ye ek saaf hollow straw hai. Agar ye alive hota, toh cell ke contents paani ki movement ko resist karte. "Xylem paani UPAR transport karta hai aur phloem paani NEECHE transport karta hai."
