We don't dump the formulas. We build them from conservation of atoms + energy direction.
Step 1 — what goes in, what comes out (photosynthesis).
Plants need a carbon source (CO2), a hydrogen/electron source (water), and energy (light). The product is sugar. Take glucose C6H12O6 as target.
6 carbons in glucose → need 6CO2. Why? Carbon must balance.
Glucose has 6 O, but we also release O2. Track O carefully → need 6H2O in and 6O2 out.
6CO2+6H2OlightC6H12O6+6O2
Check atoms: C: 6=6 ✓; H: 12=12 ✓; O: 18=6+12 ✓.
Step 2 — respiration is this reversed.
To get energy out, reverse the arrow: break glucose with O2.
Which process stores energy, photosynthesis or respiration?
Photosynthesis (stores light energy as glucose).
Which process releases energy as ATP?
Respiration.
Write the overall equation for photosynthesis.
6CO2+6H2OlightC6H12O6+6O2.
Write the overall equation for respiration.
C6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2O+energy.
Which organelle does photosynthesis?
Chloroplast.
Which organelle does respiration?
Mitochondrion.
Which cells carry out respiration?
All living cells.
Which cells carry out photosynthesis?
Only cells with chlorophyll (e.g. plant leaf cells).
Is photosynthesis anabolic or catabolic?
Anabolic (it builds glucose).
Is respiration anabolic or catabolic?
Catabolic (it breaks glucose).
At night, what is the net gas exchange of a leaf?
Takes in O2, gives out CO2 (only respiration occurs).
What is the compensation point?
The light level where photosynthesis rate equals respiration rate, so net gas exchange is zero.
Why aren't the two processes perfect reverses of each other?
They use different multi-step pathways and lose energy as heat (2nd law of thermodynamics).
Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old
Imagine a rechargeable battery. Sunlight charges the battery — that's photosynthesis, the plant packs energy into sugar. Then any living thing — plant or animal — uses that charged battery to move, grow, and stay warm; using it up is respiration, which spits out the same stuff (carbon dioxide and water) that the plant first used. So one fills the battery, the other empties it — round and round forever.
Dekho, photosynthesis aur respiration ko alag-alag ratne ki zaroorat nahi hai — ye ek dusre ka ulta (mirror image) hain. Photosynthesis mein plant sunlight ki energy use karke CO2 aur paani se glucose banata hai, aur O2 release karta hai. Yani energy ko glucose ke andar store kar liya. Respiration mein wahi glucose ko O2 ke saath tod kar energy (ATP) release karte hain, aur wapas CO2 aur paani bante hain. Same atoms, bas direction ulti.
Sabse important baat jo students galti karte hain: respiration sirf raat ko ya sirf animals mein nahi hota. Har living cell, har waqt (din-raat) respire karti hai — plant cells bhi! Din mein photosynthesis tez chalti hai isliye net result mein O2 nikalta dikhta hai, par andar respiration bhi chal raha hota hai. Raat ko light nahi hoti, toh sirf respiration bachti hai, isliye plant raat ko net CO2 chhodta hai.
Equation yaad rakhne ke liye atoms ko balance karke khud derive karo: glucose mein 6 carbon hain, toh 6CO2 chahiye — bas wahi se baaki numbers aa jaate hain. Aur yaad rakho: photosynthesis chloroplast mein, respiration mitochondria mein. Dono milkar Earth ka carbon cycle chalate hain — isliye ye topic exams aur real life dono mein super important hai.
