Understand absorption and exhaustion

WHAT are we actually reading?

The tape (time & sales) and the DOM (depth of market) let you see who is winning between takers and makers.

Building the tool: signed volume (delta)

Now combine delta with price change to distinguish the two phenomena:

Common mistakes (steel-manned)

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Imagine you're pushing a shopping cart into a doorway. Absorption = a strong friend stands in the doorway and pushes back exactly as hard as you push. You shove with all your might (lots of "volume"), but the cart doesn't move an inch — because someone is blocking you. When your arms give out, the cart rolls backward. Exhaustion = there's nobody in the doorway, but you just get tired. You slow down, push weaker and weaker, and finally stop — not because of a blocker, but because you ran out of energy. Same result (cart stops), totally different reason. In markets: absorption = a hidden big trader blocking; exhaustion = the crowd of buyers simply losing steam.

Recall drill

Absorption (definition)
Heavy aggressive orders are soaked up by a large passive (limit) order, so huge volume trades but price barely moves — the passive side wins.
Exhaustion (definition)
The aggressive order flow itself weakens (delta/volume fading), so the move stalls and reverses due to lack of fresh initiators.
Delta formula
Δ=(qibuyqisell)\Delta=\sum(q^{buy}_i-q^{sell}_i): trades at ask counted +, trades at bid counted −; isolates taker intent.
Why raw volume can't show direction
Every trade has both a buyer and seller, so total volume is symmetric; only the initiator (spread-crosser) reveals intent.
Efficiency ratio E
E=ΔP/ΔE=\Delta P/|\Delta| = price move per unit net aggressive volume; E0E\to0 signals aggression is being blocked or is ineffective.
Absorption vs exhaustion tiebreaker
Flat price with STEADY high delta = absorption (opponent present); flat price with FADING delta = exhaustion (no opponent, aggressor quit).
In absorption is the big player passive or aggressive?
Passive — a big resting limit order; an aggressive order that size would MOVE price, not freeze it.
Trade read for absorption at resistance
Failed breakout likely; passive seller absorbed demand, so a reversal/short bias when buyers exhaust against the wall.
Common mistake: high volume = strong move
False — high volume at frozen price is absorption, i.e. strength of the OPPOSITE side; effort without result reveals a hidden opponent.
Sign of exhaustion (sequence)
A declining sequence of delta into a price extreme across several bars, not a single quiet bar.

Hinglish (regional understanding)

Dekho, market me price tabhi move karta hai jab aggressive orders (market orders) book me pade passive orders (limit orders) ko kha jaate hain. Ab do situation banti hain jab price kisi level pe ruk jaata hai. Pehla: Absorption — buyers zor-zor se khareed rahe hain, bahut saara volume trade ho raha hai, par ek bada player upar limit sell laga ke sab kuch "soak" kar raha hai, isliye price hilta hi nahi. Yaani ek deewar (wall) khadi hai. Dusra: Exhaustion — koi deewar nahi hai, par khud buyers thak gaye, unki energy khatam, aggression (delta) girta ja raha hai, isliye price ruk gaya.

Farak kaise karein? Sirf flat price dekhna kaafi nahi hai — dono me price ruk jaata hai. Volume/delta ka signature decide karta hai. Agar price flat hai par volume/delta steady aur high hai, matlab koi saamne khada hai = absorption. Agar price flat hai par delta ghat ta ja raha hai (3000 → 1200 → 300), matlab koi opponent nahi, attacker khud tired = exhaustion. Yaad rakhne ka trick: Absorption = Another player (wall), Exhaustion = Energy gone.

Delta ka concept samajh lo: har trade me ek buyer aur ek seller dono hote hain, isliye total volume direction nahi batata. Isliye hum dekhte hain ki trade ask pe hua (aggressive buyer, +) ya bid pe (aggressive seller, −). Inko jodne se delta milta hai — ye asli intent batata hai. Fir efficiency E=ΔP/ΔE = \Delta P / |\Delta| dekho: agar bahut bada delta hai par price zero hila (E0E \to 0), samajh jao absorption chal raha hai.

Trading me iska use? Resistance pe agar absorption dikh jaaye (huge buy volume par price stuck), to breakout fail hone wala hai — short ka mauka. Aur agar exhaustion dikhe top pe (delta fade ho raha), to top chase mat karo, reversal aane wala hai. Bas ek baat: exhaustion ek single bar se mat maano — declining sequence dekho, tabhi confirm.
