WHY does it signal a reversal? (first-principles)

Price is set by the tug-of-war between buyers and sellers.

Mother candle = one side is winning decisively. In a downtrend, sellers slam price down and print a long red body.
Baby candle = the next session opens inside the previous body and barely moves. That means the winning side could not extend the move. The momentum that drove the big candle has evaporated.
A stalled trend is a trend that has lost its fuel. When one side runs out of steam, the other side gets a chance to take control → a reversal becomes likely.

HOW to identify it — a checklist

Let a candle have open $O$ , close $C$ . Its real body spans $[\min(O,C),\ \max(O,C)]$ .

Steps:

Confirm a prior trend (harami is meaningless in a sideways chop).
Find a long mother candle in the trend's direction.
Check the next candle's body is fully inside (containment inequalities).
Prefer opposite colour; if the baby is a doji → it's a harami cross.
Confirm: wait for the next candle to close beyond the baby in the reversal direction, or use volume/support-resistance.

Mistake 1 — using highs/lows instead of the body. It feels right because the whole candle "looks inside." Fix: harami is judged on the real body (open–close), NOT the wicks. Baby's wicks may poke outside; only its body must be contained.

Mistake 2 — treating harami as a guaranteed reversal. It feels decisive because momentum clearly stalled. Fix: a stall is not a flip. Harami is a warning, not a trigger — wait for confirmation (next candle / volume / S-R level).

Mistake 3 — confusing harami with engulfing. Both are two-candle reversals with opposite colours, so they blur. Fix: ask which candle is bigger? Harami = first bigger (small inside big). Engulfing = second bigger (big swallows small).

Mistake 4 — ignoring the prior trend. In a flat market a big-then-small pair means nothing. Fix: require a clear preceding trend.

When a fast runner suddenly freezes, you know they're about to turn around and go the other way.
