WHY do these patterns exist?

A trend continues only while the dominant side keeps winning each session. A reversal pattern is simply visual proof that the losing side suddenly showed unexpected strength.

  • In a downtrend, sellers rule. If one day the price gaps down (sellers still confident) but then buyers slam it back up past the midpoint of the previous down-candle → the sellers' story is broken. That's a Piercing Line.
  • In an uptrend, buyers rule. If price gaps up but sellers drag it back down past the midpoint of the previous up-candle → the buyers' story is broken. That's a Dark Cloud Cover.

HOW to derive the "50% rule" from first principles

We don't memorize "50%" — we build it.

Let Candle 1's real body run from open O1O_1 to close C1C_1.

Real-body midpoint is just the average of the two body ends:

Now define the penetration of Candle 2's close C2C_2 into Candle 1's body as the fraction of the body it recovered.

Piercing Line (Candle 1 red, so O1>C1O_1 > C_1; body height =O1C1= O_1 - C_1): p=C2C1O1C1p = \frac{C_2 - C_1}{O_1 - C_1}

  • p=0p = 0 → closed at Candle 1's close (C1C_1, the body bottom) = no recovery.
  • p=1p = 1 → closed at Candle 1's open (O1O_1, the body top) = full engulf.
  • Piercing Line requires 0.5<p<1\boxed{0.5 < p < 1}.

Dark Cloud Cover (Candle 1 green, C1>O1C_1 > O_1; body height =C1O1= C_1 - O_1): p=C1C2C1O1,0.5<p<1p = \frac{C_1 - C_2}{C_1 - O_1}, \qquad 0.5 < p < 1 Here p=0p=0 means C2=C1C_2=C_1 (closed at Candle 1's top, no penetration) and p=1p=1 means C2=O1C_2=O_1 (closed at Candle 1's open = full bearish engulf). So the valid close sits at O1<C2<MO_1 < C_2 < M.

Worked Examples

Forecast-then-Verify drill

[!recall]- Forecast first, then reveal Candle 1 (green): O1=30,C1=40O_1=30, C_1=40. Candle 2 (red): O2=41,C2=37O_2=41, C_2=37. Bullish or bearish? Which pattern? Valid?

Uptrend context + green→red gapping up = candidate Dark Cloud Cover. Midpoint =(30+40)/2=35=(30+40)/2=35. C2=37>35C_2=37 > 35 → penetration only p=(4037)/10=0.3=30%p=(40-37)/10=0.3=30\%. Not valid — sellers too weak. It's just a normal red day, no confirmed reversal.

Confirmation & practical use (80/20 — the vital few)

The 20% that gives 80% of the edge:

  1. Trend context is mandatory. Piercing Line means nothing mid-range; it needs a prior downtrend to reverse.
  2. The 50% close rule is the make-or-break test.
  3. The deeper the pierce (closer to 100%), the stronger the signal.
  4. Volume + a confirming next candle greatly raise reliability.

Flashcards

Piercing Line signals what kind of reversal and where?
A bullish reversal at the bottom of a downtrend.
Dark Cloud Cover signals what kind of reversal and where?
A bearish reversal at the top of an uptrend.
Piercing Line: Candle 2 must close above what level of Candle 1?
Above the 50% midpoint of Candle 1's real body (but below its open).
Dark Cloud Cover: Candle 2 must close between which two levels?
Below the 50% midpoint but above Candle 1's open (O1<C2<MO_1 < C_2 < M).
What is the real-body midpoint formula?
M=(O1+C1)/2M=(O_1+C_1)/2.
Penetration formula for a Piercing Line?
p=(C2C1)/(O1C1)p=(C_2-C_1)/(O_1-C_1), valid when 0.5<p<10.5<p<1.
Penetration formula for a Dark Cloud Cover?
p=(C1C2)/(C1O1)p=(C_1-C_2)/(C_1-O_1), valid when 0.5<p<10.5<p<1.
If Candle 2 fully closes beyond Candle 1's open, what pattern is it instead?
A Bullish (or Bearish) Engulfing pattern, not a Piercing/Dark Cloud.
Colours: Piercing Line Candle 1 and 2?
Candle 1 red (bearish), Candle 2 green (bullish).
Colours: Dark Cloud Cover Candle 1 and 2?
Candle 1 green (bullish), Candle 2 red (bearish).
Why does <50% penetration fail?
The counter-side recovered less than half of one day's move — too weak to signal a reliable trend reversal.
What must always be checked before trusting either pattern?
The prior trend context (downtrend for Piercing, uptrend for Dark Cloud).

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Imagine a tug-of-war. For days the red team (sellers) keeps winning, dragging the price down. One morning red pulls hard again and the flag drops even lower. But suddenly the green team (buyers) heaves and yanks the flag back past the middle line. Everyone watching thinks: "Whoa, green just took back more than half — maybe green is winning now!" That surprise flip is the Piercing Line. Dark Cloud Cover is the exact same story but with the teams swapped: green was winning, red suddenly yanks it back past the middle, and everyone fears green is done.

Hinglish (regional understanding)

Intuition Hinglish mein samjho

Dekho, ye dono patterns ek dusre ke mirror image hain. Piercing Line downtrend ke bottom pe banta hai aur bullish (upar jaane ka) signal deta hai. Hota kya hai — pehli candle badi red (bearish) hoti hai, market gir raha hota hai. Agli din market aur neeche gap-down khulta hai (sellers ko lagta hai wo abhi bhi strong hain), lekin phir buyers zabardast push karte hain aur close ko pehli candle ke aadhe se upar le jaate hain. Matlab kal ki giravat ka aadha se zyada wapas cover ho gaya — yahi shock sellers ka confidence tod deta hai.

Dark Cloud Cover bilkul ulta hai: uptrend ke top pe banta hai, bearish signal. Pehli candle badi green hoti hai, market chad raha hota hai. Agla din gap-up khulta hai (buyers confident), par phir sellers price ko neeche kheech ke pehli green candle ke midpoint ke neeche close karwa dete hain. Ek important baat: Candle 2 ka close pehli candle ke open (O1O_1) ke upar rehna chahiye — agar open se bhi neeche chala gaya to wo full Bearish Engulfing ban jaata hai, jo alag (aur strong) pattern hai.

Sabse important rule: 50% ka level cross hona zaroori hai. Agar close sirf 30-40% tak hi wapas aaya, to signal weak hai, us pe trust mat karo. Formula simple hai: Piercing ke liye p=(C2C1)/(O1C1)p=(C_2-C_1)/(O_1-C_1) aur Dark Cloud ke liye p=(C1C2)/(C1O1)p=(C_1-C_2)/(C_1-O_1), dono me 0.5<p<10.5<p<1 hona chahiye.

Yaad rakho — pattern se pehle trend context dekho. Piercing Line tabhi valid jab pehle downtrend ho; Dark Cloud tabhi jab pehle uptrend ho. Bina trend ke ye sirf random candles hain. Volume aur agli confirming candle dekh lo to reliability aur badh jaati hai.
