WHAT is KYC?

WHY each step exists (first-principles reasoning)

The whole process is engineered to answer four questions. Every document maps to one:

Question the system must answer What proves it
"Are you a real, tax-registered person?" PAN card
"Do you live where you claim?" Aadhaar / address proof
"Is this actually you right now?" In-Person Verification (IPV) + live selfie
"Where does your money legally go?" Bank proof (cancelled cheque / statement)

HOW the process flows (step by step)

Figure — Learn the account opening (KYC) process
  1. PAN + Aadhaar entry → establishes tax identity + address.
  2. Document upload → PAN, address proof, photo, bank proof (cancelled cheque/statement), signature.
  3. In-Person Verification (IPV) → a short live video / selfie confirming a real human matches the documents.
  4. e-Sign with Aadhaar OTP → you digitally sign the account-opening form using an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  5. KRA / broker verification → broker checks records against the central KRA database.
  6. Account activation → you receive your Client ID / DP ID and login credentials.

Flashcards

What does KYC stand for and what is its purpose?
Know Your Customer — a mandatory process to verify identity, address and financial legitimacy before opening a trading/demat account.
Which regulator mandates KYC for Indian stock accounts?
SEBI.
What does a KRA (KYC Registration Agency) do?
Stores your KYC record centrally so it can be reused across brokers instead of repeating full KYC.
Which document proves your tax identity in KYC?
PAN card.
What is IPV and why can't a photo replace it?
In-Person Verification (live video/selfie) — it proves a live human matches the documents; a static photo can be stolen.
Name the three accounts typically created together.
Trading account, Demat account, and linked Bank account.
Why is account activation modelled as an AND (product) of checks?
Because every trust gate must pass; if any one is 0 (missing), the whole product is 0 and the account cannot open.
What commonly blocks account opening related to PAN?
An unlinked/inoperative PAN (PAN not linked with Aadhaar).
How is the account-opening form legally signed digitally?
e-Sign using an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
Why must the bank account name match your PAN name?
To ensure money routes only to the verified person and prevent misdirection/laundering.

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Imagine you want to join a members-only club that keeps everyone's money safe. Before they give you a locker (demat) and a request-window (trading), the guard checks: your ID card (PAN), where you live (Aadhaar), your actual face on camera (IPV), and which piggy bank is yours (bank proof). Only when every check says "yes" do they hand you a key. Miss even one, and no key — because one fake person can rob the whole club. That's KYC.

Hinglish (regional understanding)

Intuition Hinglish mein samjho

Dekho, KYC ka matlab hai "Know Your Customer" — yaani stock account kholne se pehle broker ko yeh pakka karna hota hai ki tum ek asli, unique insaan ho. Yeh SEBI ka rule hai. Bina KYC ke tum ek bhi share nahi khareed sakte, kyunki system ko darr hota hai ki kahin koi fraud ya money-laundering na kar de. Isliye woh tumse PAN card (tax identity), Aadhaar (address), ek live selfie ya video (IPV), aur bank proof (cancelled cheque) maangte hain.

Ek important baat: ye saare checks ek saath AND logic pe chalte hain — matlab sabhi ka verified hona zaroori hai. Agar tumne sab kuch de diya lekin IPV wala live video skip kar diya, toh account nahi khulega, chahe baaki sab perfect ho. Isko formula mein aise samjho: agar koi ek cheez 0 (missing) hai, toh sabka multiplication 0 ho jaata hai. Isiliye har gate — PAN, Address, IPV, Bank, e-Sign — poora karna padta hai.

Common galtiyan: PAN aur Aadhaar link na hona (inoperative PAN account block kar deta hai), purana utility bill address proof ke liye dena (usually 3 mahine se naya chahiye), aur bank naam aur PAN naam ka match na hona. In sab ko pehle theek kar lo. Aur haan — sab sahi dene ke baad bhi account turant activate nahi hota; KRA verification mein kuch ghante se 24-48 hrs lag sakte hain.

Yaad rakhne ka trick: PAIBE — PAN, Address, IPV, Bank, E-sign. "Please Always Identify Before Entering." Ek baar KYC KRA ke paas store ho gayi, toh agli baar dusre broker pe fatafat ho jaata hai, kyunki record centrally reuse hota hai.
