Depositories KYUN exist karti hain?

YE KYUN zaroori tha — 1996 se pehle, India mein shares physical paper certificates ke form mein hote the. Isse bahut badi problems hoti thin:

  • Bad delivery — phate, jaali, ya galat sign kiye gaye certificates.
  • Theft & loss — paper chori ho sakta tha ya aag/paani se damage ho sakta tha.
  • Slow transfer — ownership change karne mein postal + registrar work ki wajah se hafte lag jaate the.
  • High cost — stamp duty, courier, handling.

Depositories Act, 1996 ne legal framework banaya, aur India ko do depositories mili.

NSDL aur CDSL KYA hain?

India mein exactly do depositories hain:

Feature NSDL CDSL
Full name National Securities Depository Ltd Central Depository Services Ltd
Founded 1996 1999
Promoted/linked to NSE (mainly) BSE (mainly)
Historically stronger in Institutional / value held Retail account numbers

System KAISE fit hota hai? (The chain)

Aap directly depository se baat nahi karte. Aap ek Depository Participant (DP) ke through jaate hain.

Jab aap 100 shares khareedte hain toh actually kya hota hai

Depository kaunse key roles play karti hai (80/20 core)

  1. Dematerialisation — paper → electronic.
  2. Rematerialisation — electronic → paper (rare, agar aap kabhi certificate chahte hain).
  3. Settlement of trades — book-entry credit/debit.
  4. Holding record — kaun kya own karta hai uska official register (Beneficial Owner).
  5. Corporate actions — dividends, bonus, splits, rights.
  6. Pledge / hypothecation — aap demat shares ko loan collateral ke roop mein pledge kar sakte hain, depository mein recorded.

Recall Feynman: ek 12-saal ke bachche ko samjhao

Socho aapke video-game coins pehle paper cards par print hote the jinhein aapko har trade mein dost ko mail karna padta tha. Slow, aur cards kho jaate the! Toh humne ek bada computer banaya jo sirf ek scoreboard rakhta hai: "Tumhare paas 100 coins hain, tumhare dost ke paas 50." Jab aap trade karte ho, computer sirf numbers change karta hai — kuch mail nahi hota. Woh scoreboard computer depository hai. Aap ise ek helper app (aapke broker = DP) ke through access karte ho. Coins abhi bhi tumhari hain; computer unhe safely yaad rakhta hai. India mein aisi do scoreboards hain: NSDL aur CDSL.
