WHY did Dalton propose a theory at all?

1808 tak, chemists ke paas teen stubborn experimental laws the jinhe explain karna zaroori tha:

WHY these needed atoms: whole-number ratios tab hi sense banate hain jab matter discrete, countable units mein aata ho. Tum "half a lump" combine nahi kar sakte — isliye ratios integers hone chahiye.

WHAT are the postulates?

HOW the postulates derive the mass laws

Yeh Feynman test hai: agar postulates sach hain, toh laws logically nikalni chahiye.

Limitations — WHERE Dalton breaks

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Socho LEGO bricks. Har brick ek tiny ball hai jise atom kehte hain. Tum brick ko aadha nahi kaat sakte, aur saari laal bricks ka weight same hota hai, saari neeli bricks ka weight same hota hai. Jab tum cheezein banate ho (chemistry), tum kabhi bricks add ya lose nahi karte — tum sirf unhe tod ke rebuild karte ho. Isliye tumhare LEGO ka total weight same rehta hai, aur tum hamesha poori bricks use karte ho (1 laal + 2 neeli), kabhi aadhi brick nahi. Isliye paani ka recipe hamesha same hota hai. Dalton mostly sahi the — lekin baad mein humne paya ki har brick actually aur bhi chhote pieces se bani hai, aur kuch "laal" bricks secretly thodi bhaari hoti hain (isotopes)!

Active Recall Flashcards

Dalton ne apni atomic theory kis saal propose ki?
1808
Kaun sa law kehta hai ki mass na create hoti hai na destroy?
Law of Conservation of Mass (Lavoisier)
Postulate 4 (whole-number ratios) directly kaun se law ko explain karta hai?
Law of Definite Proportions AUR Law of Multiple Proportions
Law of Multiple Proportions state karo.
Jab do elements ek se zyada compound banate hain, toh ek element ke masses jo doosre element ke fixed mass ke saath combine hote hain, woh small whole-number ratios mein hote hain
CO mein 12 g C ke saath 16 g O hai; CO₂ mein 12 g C ke saath 32 g O hai. Kaun sa ratio multiple proportions confirm karta hai?
16:32 = 1:2
Kaun sa postulate electrons/protons/neutrons ki discovery se toot jaata hai?
Postulate 1 — ki atom indivisible hai
Kaun si discovery ne "same element ke atoms mass mein identical hain" ko toda?
Isotopes
Isobars kya hote hain?
Alag-alag elements ke atoms jinka same mass number hota hai (e.g. ⁴⁰Ar aur ⁴⁰Ca)
Kaun si phenomenon "atoms create/destroy nahi ho sakte" ko violate karti hai?
Nuclear reactions (mass–energy conversion, E=mc²)
Definite aur multiple proportions mein kya fark hai?
Definite = ek compound hamesha same ratio; Multiple = same elements ke do+ compounds ke ratios aapas mein whole numbers mein hain
Ek aisa compound ka example do jo fixed whole-number ratios violate karta ho.
Non-stoichiometric compounds jaise Fe₀.₉₅O (wüstite)
