WHAT is Interphase?

Interphase ek resting phase nahi hai (yeh ek common misconception hai). Cell metabolically bahut zyada active hoti hai. Ise teen sub-phases mein divide kiya gaya hai:

Sub-phase Name Main job
G₁ First Gap Cell badhti hai, proteins/organelles banati hai, environment monitor karti hai
S Synthesis DNA replicate hota hai (chromosome content double ho jaata hai)
G₂ Second Gap Cell aur badhti hai, mitosis ke liye proteins banati hai, DNA check karta hai

WHY does the cell need each phase? (first-principles reasoning)

Why G₁? Jab ek cell division se paida hoti hai, woh chhoti hoti hai aur har cheez ki sirf ek copy hoti hai. Aakhirkar do daughters banane ke liye, use pehle restock karna padta hai: enzymes, ribosomes, organelles, aur energy. Sirf tabhi jab conditions favourable hon, woh G₁ checkpoint (restriction point) cross karta hai aur division ke liye commit karta hai.

Why S? Har daughter ko ek complete genome milna chahiye. Agar DNA pehle copy na ho, toh splitting se har daughter ko sirf aadha DNA milega → yeh fatal hoga. Isliye S phase mein DNA exactly ek baar duplicate hota hai.

Why G₂? Replication mein errors aa sakti hain, aur mitosis ko special machinery chahiye hoti hai (spindle ke liye tubulin, etc.). G₂ ek doosri growth + quality-control window hai mitosis ke irreversible step se pehle.

HOW the DNA amount changes (the key derivation)

Yahi woh hissa hai jahan students galat ho jaate hain, isliye ise carefully derive karo.

Maan lo:

  • C = ek single (unreplicated) chromosome set ka DNA content = "1C worth of DNA".

Worked Examples

Common Mistakes (Steel-manned)

Recall Feynman: explain to a 12-year-old

Ek Lego house socho jo do identical houses banana chahta hai. Pehle woh extra bricks ikhathe karta hai aur bada hota hai (G₁). Phir woh apni instruction manual ko photocopies karta hai taaki har future house ko ek mile (S). Phir woh copies double-check karta hai aur splitting ke liye tools ikhathe karta hai (G₂). Sirf itni saari tayaari ke baad hi woh actually split hota hai. Yeh saari prep work interphase hai — house poore time normal dikhta hai, lekin andar se woh super busy hai tayaari karte karte.

Flashcards

What three sub-phases make up interphase, in order?
G₁ → S → G₂
What happens specifically in S phase?
DNA replication — har chromatid copy hoti hai, DNA 2C se 4C ho jaata hai.
Why does chromosome number stay 2n after S phase even though DNA doubles?
Dono copies (sister chromatids) ek single centromere par joined rehti hain; chromosomes centromeres se count hote hain.
What is the DNA content of a diploid cell in G₁ vs G₂?
G₁ mein 2C, G₂ mein 4C.
Why is interphase NOT called a resting phase?
Cell metabolically bahut active hoti hai — grow karti hai, proteins/organelles banati hai, aur DNA replicate karti hai.
What form is DNA in during interphase?
Loose, uncondensed chromatin (visible chromosomes nahi).
What is G₀?
Ek quiescent state jismein cells (G₁ se) enter karti hain jab woh divide karna band kar deti hain, jaise neurons; DNA 2C par rehta hai.
What is the restriction point?
G₁ checkpoint jahan cell irreversibly division ke liye commit karta hai agar conditions favourable hon.
For a human cell (2n=46) in G₂, how many chromosomes and chromatids?
46 chromosomes, 92 chromatids.
Roughly what fraction of the cell cycle is interphase?
Lagbhag 90–95%.

Connections

  • Cell Cycle Overview — interphase cycle ka bulk hai.
  • Mitosis Phases — G₂ ke baad kya hota hai (M phase: PMAT).
  • DNA Replication — S phase ka molecular detail.
  • Cell Cycle Checkpoints — G₁, G₂ aur restriction point quality controls.
  • Chromosome Structure (Chromatid & Centromere) — kyun number ≠ amount.
  • Meiosis — iske pehle bhi S phase wala interphase hota hai.
